Making Shadow Characters

Beginning and advanced courses with shadow artist Maria Bodmann provide experience in design, carving, painting and dying of traditional shadow characters and student creations.

As a one time hands-on workshop by Maria Bodmann

Participants choose a character from the
templates provided and make a small simplified Balinese style shadow character.

This workshop introduces students to the basic
artistic skills used in making shadow
characters, including carving and
coloring the characters.

The class can accommodate a variety of ages including adults. Children 6 to 12 years old must be accompanied by an adult or older sibling.

Optimum class size is 15, but more participants can be accommodated. The ultimate maximum number of students is thirty but fifteen or less is best.

This workshop functions as a stand-alone workshop or as Class #1 in longer residencies. For additional information regarding longer residencies please see the Art & Craft of Shadow Theater.
